For more than half a century, El Matador has held a cherished place in the hearts—and appetites—of Utahns. What began as a humble local eatery has blossomed into a generational landmark, built on a foundation of authentic recipes, warm hospitality, and an unwavering dedication to the community we call home.

The El Matador story officially began when our original Bountiful restaurant first opened its doors in 1963. From day one, it captured the local spirit, quickly establishing itself as a beloved gathering place for families, friends, and food lovers alike.

After 31 successful years at our original site, our visionary founder and owner, Artoosh Hasratian, made the bold decision to relocate to our current, expanded home at 606 S Main Street in Bountiful. This move allowed us to better serve our growing family of patrons while preserving the cozy, welcoming atmosphere our guests had come to know and love.

Tragically, the El Matador family suffered a profound loss when Artoosh passed away unexpectedly on Memorial Day in 2014. Yet, his passion, recipes, and work ethic did not fade with him. True to the strong family values he instilled, El Matador remains proudly family-owned and operated to this day, with loved ones stepping up to keep his dream alive and thriving.

Through decades of change, economic shifts, and growing communities, some things should never change. Today, El Matador's guiding philosophy remains exactly as it has always been, to provide our community with a true sense of comfort, unwavering constancy, and the absolute best food in Utah—one plate, and one family, at a time.

 In Loving Memory ARTOOSH HASRATIAN October 14, 1942 – May 26, 2014 … our founder, husband, father, grandpa, employer, and friend. It is impossible to find the words to describe someone so extraordinary. Quite simply, he was the greatest. His heart of gold will be missed.
